Description

Each Department Director is responsible to the Dean for providing overall stewardship within the department to advance the mission of the department and institution.     

The Director is expected to provide leadership in the department and School of Medicine through a commitment to excellence and impact.  In addition, the director should serve as a role model for the department by demonstrating institutional citizenship through engagement within the school and Johns Hopkins Medicine, as well being a leader in the profession at large. The Director is responsible for promoting a positive workplace environment that supports teamwork, respect and collegiality among all departmental faculty and staff.

The Director sets the tone for the department and promotes the vision and mission of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, as articulated by the Dean and School of Medicine leadership. The Director is expected to collaborate with appropriate administrative and clinical leadership to achieve departmental and school goals. The Director is responsible for the development and oversight of departmental strategic planning to ensure excellence and impact across the department’s missions. 

The Director is responsible for all aspects of departmental administration, including execution of the mission imperatives, operations, finances, and mentoring of faculty and trainees.  

Qualifications

The Director of Art as Applied to Medicine is required to hold a graduate-level degree (such as a Master's or PhD) in a relevant field, including but not limited to medical illustration, fine arts, design, or a related discipline. The candidate should possess a strong understanding of the intersection between art and medicine and demonstrate a commitment to advancing the field through innovative practices and educational initiatives. The candidate must have demonstrated expertise appropriate for appointment as an Associate Professor or Professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.  The candidate must have at least three years of administrative and leadership experience in an academic institution and be eligible to work in the United States.
