The Opportunity

Science has a communication problem. Groundbreaking research goes unseen because it can't be visualized clearly. Critical health information fails to reach patients. Discoveries that could change lives stay locked in jargon and dense text.

Medical illustrators have always been the bridge, translating complexity into clarity. But there aren't enough of us, and the demand for scientifically accurate visuals is exploding.

At BioRender, we believe technology should amplify the impact of medical illustration, not replace it. We're building tools that let a single illustrator's expertise scale to help millions of scientists communicate their work. And we're entering a new chapter where AI will make this even more possible.

We're looking for a Creative Director to help set the standard for what scientifically accurate, beautifully crafted visual communication looks like, and to shape how that standard is maintained as our tools evolve.

What You'll Do

Define excellence. Establish and uphold the visual and scientific quality bar across BioRender's expanding library and AI-generated outputs. Your eye will be the benchmark.

Lead and grow a world-class team. Build, mentor, and inspire a team of medical illustrators and designers. Create an environment where craft is celebrated and scientific rigor is non-negotiable.

Shape the future of AI in our field. Work directly with our AI and product teams to ensure that emerging tools reflect the depth of knowledge and artistic judgment that define great medical illustration. You'll help determine what AI should and shouldn't do, and ensure human expertise remains central.

Be a voice for the discipline. Represent BioRender in the medical illustration community. Advocate for how technology can create more opportunities for illustrators: more demand, broader reach, higher impact, rather than fewer.

Elevate scientific communication globally. Help us realize a world where every scientist, educator, and clinician has access to clear, accurate visuals - because the tools were built by people who truly understand the craft.

Who You Are

  • An accomplished medical illustrator with 5-10 years of experience and a portfolio that demonstrates both scientific depth and artistic excellence
  • A leader who has built or managed creative teams and knows how to nurture talent while maintaining high standards
  • Curious about technology and its potential: you don't need to be an AI expert, but you're excited to learn and shape how these tools develop
  • A strong communicator who can articulate why accuracy and craft matter to technical and non-technical audiences alike
  • Someone who cares about the future of the profession and wants to help define it

Why This Role Matters

The next decade will determine whether AI becomes a tool that empowers medical illustrators or one that diminishes the field. We believe the answer depends on whether illustrators are in the room, leading, advising, and setting the standards.

This role isn't about helping AI replace jobs. It's about ensuring that as demand for scientific visuals grows exponentially, medical illustrators are positioned at the center of that growth, with tools that extend their reach and influence, not undercut their value.

BioRender already serves over 4 million scientists. With the right creative leadership, we can make scientifically accurate visual communication the norm, not the exception, and create a future where the medical illustration community thrives because of technology, not despite it.

About BioRender

BioRender is on a mission to accelerate science communication. Our platform helps scientists create professional figures in minutes, and our work is used by researchers at every major university and biotech company in the world. We're a team that believes in craft, rigor, and the power of visuals to change how science is understood.

We'd love to hear from you - and we'd love to hear your perspective on where this field is headed.
